Roof Rail Installation

Postby janaka on Fri Aug 10, 2007 7:29 am

Purpose: To make the GP look little better, IMO.
Roof Rails were only available on certain Models of Grand Prix such as Special Editions, Daytona and the 40th Anniversary models. Not all GP's are so lucky to have these so I've decided to upgrade and buy these.
Here is a picture showing everything that i used to do this mod
alcohol, a small file, cotton pad thingies (good reason to have women around!) and a helper ;)

Here is a picture of what most Grand Prix's look like stock, you'll notice the roof line is pretty plain.
(thanks to Chris, Steve, James, Bobby, and Cabby for making the picture THAT much better ;))

The first step in installing the roof rails is to remove the existing 'trim' piece that sits in the place that the roof rails go.
So here's where the file was used to pry up the weather striping to get access to the trim

Next you grab some trim and start pulling, i tried at first to remove it so that it was 'reusable' if need be... doesn't happen guys/gals so here's me ripping it out (when in doubt rip it out...eh chris?)

Next you'll notice that there is residue and dirt and stuff where you just removed the trim from. This is where you use the alcohol and cotton thingies.

Here is the channel all cleaned out.

Finally here comes the fun part. You need to clean the bottom of the roof rails off, agian with the alcohol and cotton thingies and then apply the 3M double sided super-lethal extra holding tough tape (well that's what it is!)

Once this is done walk back to the car and remove the second side of the tape and get ready to install the rail. The trick I learned was to start at the front and slowly go to the back. At the front of the rail you will notice a small notch that is ALL that needs to go under the windshield striping.
pry the windshield striping back and apply as stated. like this.

That's it, that's all.
Here is the finished product, many thanks to Amanda for all the help in this mod.
